52 Week Sewing Challenge – Week 4

This weeks Challenge: Something for a Boy (Accepted)

This weeks theme was perfect for me with two crazy little boy monsters in our house, plus I had been meaning to sew them some Australia Day pants for awhile now. I’ve been on the look out for Australian flag fabric for ages to make these pants but couldn’t find it anywhere. Guess what I saw in the shop the day after I finished them!

I found this cute kangaroo print though that is perfect for Australia Day pants and means they can be worn more often than the flag fabric could have anyway. I chose to make the Star Shorts in the Hunter version.  (Top right in this photo) I chose to leave the pocket out, my boys both love pockets but my washing machine probably can’t handle washing any more of the rocks they like to hide in them.

I also chose to use the full elastic waist band from the scooter shorts.

The grey pair are size 7 and the blue pair are size 3. I’m excited for the boys to wear these for our family BBQ on Australia Day.

52 Week Sewing Challenge – Week 3

This weeks Challenge: Something to make sewing easier (Rejected)

Best laid plans and all.. I had intended to make something to make sewing easier this week, the plan was a Chair Bag for the back of my sewing chair (You can find the free pattern here).

But Mr 2 is starting to toilet train and needed some training pants, so Tooshies it was, Tooshies are a nappy cover but also perfect for toilet training pants!

If they are made as per the pattern the small panel at the front ends up upside down but with a quick little change the front panel can face the right way up. Take your pattern and mark one line along the dotted pattern join line, mark another line 1 cm below it as shown in the photo. ( Below if you have the back end at the top)

Cut your back panel to the bottom line, turn your pattern piece around and cut the front panel to the top line. Attach these two pieces together by facing right sides together and overlocking.

If you’d like you can then fold the overlocked seam to one side and top stitch it in place. Then follow the instructions in the pattern to complete.

The little monster had stolen one pair from my sewing desk before I’d finished the other pair so I will be making a few more of these in the coming weeks.

52 Week Sewing Challenge – Week 2

This weeks challenge: Something from the last fabric you purchased. (Challenge Accepted)

More Sprouts Bloomies again this week, I haven’t sewn anything girly for awhile and when I saw these beautiful fabrics during the sales i just had to get some. Size 2 Bloomies don’t take up much fabric so I still have plenty left to play with.

I made 3 pairs this week again I have made some variations to the pattern, except for the blush pair.

The blush set are made as per the pattern

The sage pair has thicker cuffs, so instead of cutting the cuff piece from the pattern in half I have cut 2.

The lavender pair also have thicker cuffs, the belt and tabs from the MOD section of the pattern and belt loops as shown in last weeks challenge blog.

It’s not too late to join the challenge, you can find the facebook group here.

52 Week Sewing Challenge – Week 1

This weeks challenge: Something Warm -Rejected (It’s the middle of summer in Australia and while I thought about making something warm I just couldn’t bring myself to do it)

This week has been super challenging to get any sewing done for me, the holidays are always a bit chaotic to begin with but I hurt my shoulder and have had to spend most of the week with it immobilized in a sling. I’m allowed to have it off for an hour or two a day and have strict orders from the doctor not to do housework while it’s sore.

So I got a little bit of sewing done and finally finished my first item for the year, just in time too. I found this cute cat print as a remnant at my local Spotlight and just had to get it for my niece. I chose to make the Sprouts Bloomies in size 4 with a few changes.

I wanted a wider cuff at the bottom, so instead of cutting the recommended cuff piece in half as directed in the pattern I cut out 2.

I added the belt from the MODS section at the back of the pattern but created my own belt loops by making a double fold binding from a 2 1/2″ strip and sewing it shut, each belt loop is 2 1/2’long and there are 4 in total. I attached them before putting the elastic in the waistband 3 1/2″ from the center seam on both sides, front and back.

Sewing Resolutions for 2018

I’m not usually big on New Year’s resolutions, what’s the point of waiting for a particular day to make changes? However towards the end of the year a lot of people were posting collage photos of all the items they had made for 2017, so I thought I’d join in.

My 2017 creations collage

Only thing is after looking at it for awhile I realised just how many items were missing! Things I’d sewn up at the last minute for gifts and forgotten to take a photo of, or even just that I haven’t kept my photos organised enough to find them. So this year I decided I’d like to try harder to take a photo of each item I make so that at the end of the year I can make another collage that includes them all this time.

My favorite sew for the year would have to be this Bazinga Backpack. I did start out making it for one of the kids but have now claimed it for carrying all my crafty supplies for sewing meetups.

The other thing I realised was I do a lot of sewing for the kidlets and other people but not for me, so this year I will try to sew more for me. Starting with a new EZ Wrap Wallet that I will sew up during the Sew Along.

What are your sewing resolutions for 2018?
