Making Christmas clothing for your children

Making clothes for your children is great because you can get them involved in the process. Your little ones can choose the fabric they want and share any other design ideas that they have with you. Have you ever had the perfect article of clothing for your little one in mind but not been able to find it in store? Why not use our PDF patterns to make it yourself. You can also use sewing your own children’s clothing as an opportunity to teach your children to learn how to sew too. I remember when I was little my mum would make all my clothes for me and get me involved in the process. When I was old enough to use a sewing machine, we went through the whole process of sewing a dress together., including picking out the pattern and choosing the fabric and even the zipper! It’s one of the best memories I have with my mum and it taught me a useful creative life skill. Creative activities are a great way for your family to spend quality time together.

Making clothes for your children won’t just make them happy, it will make you happy too! Sewing has been proven to improve your mood, mental health and overall wellbeing. Our shop has a variety of PDF patterns to choose from to get you started creating your own children’s clothing. If you’re not familiar with PDF patterns, read our blog post outlining all the benefits of PDF patterns over traditional sewing patterns.

Handmade articles of clothing are unique and one of a kind. Even if you use the same dress pattern multiple times, each item will be different and unique. Handmade clothing items aren’t just for your children, but they can be made for gifts for the other children in your life, like your nieces, nephews, and children of friends.

Below I’ve curated my top six flosstyle PDF patterns to download for Christmas clothing creations: whether they be for yourself or for gifts! If you haven’t used PDF patterns before, give our how-to guide a read and you’ll be an expert in no time.

Skirts

Six skirt patterns for six dollars – how good is that? The Milkshake Skirts pattern set is suitable for beginners and will you keep you busy creating all sorts of adorable skirts for the little ones in your life.

Sewing Challenge 2020 – Week 10

This weeks challenge: Charity
Accepted/Rejected: Rejected

I took Parker to the fabric shop with me a few weeks ago and he picked out this cute bulldog fabric, I have been trying to decide what to make with it. I finally decided to use it as the cuffs and pockets on some denim Star Shorts.

I made these using the Hunter Style without the cargo pockets and the full elastic waistband. These are great as everyday shorts and I find by making them in denim the boys get a lot of wear out of them.

If I am making something for one of the boys I try to make the another one at the same time so they both get something and they match too. I think they sew up a lot faster too when I’m making more than one at the same time.

How cute are these labels?! Parker likes to dress himself now but struggles when there isn’t an obvious tag to let him know which is the back. I got this one from Kylie and the Machine, and love the finished look they add to my makes.

Sewing Challenge 2020 – Week 8

This weeks challenge: Pinterest Nailed It
Accepted/Rejected: Accepted

This week I wanted to try something a bit different, I found the pants below while looking on Pinterest and decided I would have a go at lino printing/stamping to create my own fabric. I remember at high school we had to make a lino print as part of our art class assignment but we printed it on to paper not fabric.

I found some rubber blocks and carving tools at Spotlight that looked perfect for what I was wanting, the rubber blocks were thicker than the lino tiles I used in high school but that made it easier to hold when stamping the fabric. They were also much softer than the lino tile which made carving them easier as well.

I found a dog picture that I liked online and printed it out, then traced it onto tracing paper and flipped it over onto the rubber block and pressed to transfer the design onto the block. I then used the tools to carve away the parts of the design I didn’t want to be printed. (This was a little hard because in drawing and painting you add the parts you want so it took a little bit to wrap my head around)

Once the design was carved I started testing it and removing a little more in the parts I wasn’t happy with and then I was ready to start printing onto my fabric. I traced out my pattern pieces onto the fabric so I was able to see were the prints would end up once the shorts were complete.

I mixed a regular acrylic paint with fabric medium to make the finished design washable and stamped my design onto the fabric. I made one pair with the design the same way up and reapplied paint between every stamp, the other pair I changed the design around and reapplied paint less often. I am very happy with how they turned out and the boys love them, so thats the most important part. I also got these amazing labels from Kylie and the Machine to add a finishing touch.

I am hoping to have a go at potato stamping in the next few weeks with the kids as well. Have you tried stamping/printing your own fabric? I would love to see photos if you have.

xx Gail

Star Shorts Sew Along

The Star Shorts Sew Along is starting soon and we have decided to do something a little bit different, my eldest son Braden will be sewing and making the videos.

Braden has been telling me for a little while now that he wants to be a YouTuber when he grows up, I asked him if he wanted to help make some sewing videos for Flosstyle and he jumped at the chance.

I’m so proud of the effort he has put into the sewing and making of the videos (I think I was lucky enough to make an appearance once before I was told that I was better behind the camera punching the record button for him) and can’t wait to share them with you.

All the videos will be posted to our YouTube channel.

And if you haven’t already got it you can grab the Star Shorts Pattern here.

52 Week Sewing Challenge – Week 4

This weeks Challenge: Something for a Boy (Accepted)

This weeks theme was perfect for me with two crazy little boy monsters in our house, plus I had been meaning to sew them some Australia Day pants for awhile now. I’ve been on the look out for Australian flag fabric for ages to make these pants but couldn’t find it anywhere. Guess what I saw in the shop the day after I finished them!

I found this cute kangaroo print though that is perfect for Australia Day pants and means they can be worn more often than the flag fabric could have anyway. I chose to make the Star Shorts in the Hunter version.  (Top right in this photo) I chose to leave the pocket out, my boys both love pockets but my washing machine probably can’t handle washing any more of the rocks they like to hide in them.

I also chose to use the full elastic waist band from the scooter shorts.

The grey pair are size 7 and the blue pair are size 3. I’m excited for the boys to wear these for our family BBQ on Australia Day.

Happy Sewing xx
