Sewing Challenge 2020 – Week 19

This weeks challenge: Aussie Fabric Only
Accepted/Rejected: Accepted

I don’t like to pay the crazy shipping fees for fabric from outside of Australia and trying to figure out the conversion rates, so almost all of my fabric has been bought from an Australian retailer. (and since it would be super hard to find fabric that was manufactured completely in Australia I’m counting purchased from an Australian retailer as accepting this weeks challenge.)

It got pretty cold here this week and Parker has been wearing some of last years winter pants but he’s had a growth spurt and while they still fit (just) they aren’t going to last all of winter so I thought I better get organised and get him some new winter clothes sewn up.

My favourite pattern for winter pants is the Sprouts in the Twigs option. They are great for daycare as he can still run around and play and even when they are a bit too long the cuff keeps them in place on his leg and not in the dirt so I can make them a a little longer for more wear.

I made two pairs and still need to make a few more, the foxes came from Fabric by Missy Rose and the Sharks came from a retailer that has since closed, they are both 220 Cotton Lycra which I have found stands up to the roughness of my crazy kid.

Sewing Challenge 2020 – Week 18

This weeks challenge: Sleepwear
Accepted/Rejected: Accepted

One of my favourite ways to use the Sprouts Tree option is to add a ribbing cuff to the bottom of the leg, this is great for pj pants or even day pants depending on the fabric used. The Marvel pair below were the first pair I made with the ribbing cuff and I am super sad the kid outgrew them and I don’t have enough of the fabric to make a bigger pair.

For pj pants I like to make them with flannelette so they are great for the colder nights we have been having. Parker spent ages looking through my fabric stash to pick which prints he would like and finally decided on these 2.

He wanted me to make matching ones for his brother as well. I really struggled trying to take a photo of these altogether because the boys have grown so much.

Sewing Challenge 2020 – Week 16

This weeks challenge: ANZAC Week
Accepted/Rejected: Rejected

After making the bibs last week I had lots of this super soft double gauze left over and decided it would be perfect as Sprouts.

These are the Trees option with a small hack, to give them an elastic cuff at the bottom of the leg. I cut one of the Tree Cuffs, then cut it in half lengthwise to give a narrower cuff, I attached this as normal but left an opening to thread the elastic through.

I cut the elastic to the same length as the Bloomies Cuff for the size I was making and threaded through and then closed the gap.

These match perfectly with the bibs from last week to make a cute little outfit for my nephew.

Accepted/Rejected: Rejected

A few weeks ago I got some amazing double gauze fabric that I have been wondering what to make with, its super soft and I love the earthy tone to the colours.

I haven’t sewn with double gauze before so decided to start with something small this week and made some Hybrid Bibs. These are great for catching drool and are adjustable from newborn to toddler size.

Sewing Challenge 2020 – Week 12

This weeks challenge: Scrap Busting
Accepted/Rejected: Accepted

I love appliques for scrap busting, they use such tiny pieces of fabric that I can find a use for even my smallest scraps. I have been working on some appliques patterns getting them ready for release and the dog I made this week is one of those so no pattern available yet.

The One Yard Tote is perfect for adding appliques to and is a super quick sew, perfect for a last minute gift. The One Yard Tote is a free pattern too which makes it even better.

I love being able to upcycle when I’m sewing, so the inside of this one yard tote is made from and old quilt cover that I got from an Op Shop last year for $3. I’ve lost count of the things I have made with it already and there is still so much of it left in my cupboard waiting to be turned into other new creations.

Sewing Challenge 2020 – Week 10

This weeks challenge: Charity
Accepted/Rejected: Rejected

I took Parker to the fabric shop with me a few weeks ago and he picked out this cute bulldog fabric, I have been trying to decide what to make with it. I finally decided to use it as the cuffs and pockets on some denim Star Shorts.

I made these using the Hunter Style without the cargo pockets and the full elastic waistband. These are great as everyday shorts and I find by making them in denim the boys get a lot of wear out of them.

If I am making something for one of the boys I try to make the another one at the same time so they both get something and they match too. I think they sew up a lot faster too when I’m making more than one at the same time.

How cute are these labels?! Parker likes to dress himself now but struggles when there isn’t an obvious tag to let him know which is the back. I got this one from Kylie and the Machine, and love the finished look they add to my makes.
