Sewing Challenge 2020 – Week 18

This weeks challenge: Sleepwear
Accepted/Rejected: Accepted

One of my favourite ways to use the Sprouts Tree option is to add a ribbing cuff to the bottom of the leg, this is great for pj pants or even day pants depending on the fabric used. The Marvel pair below were the first pair I made with the ribbing cuff and I am super sad the kid outgrew them and I don’t have enough of the fabric to make a bigger pair.

For pj pants I like to make them with flannelette so they are great for the colder nights we have been having. Parker spent ages looking through my fabric stash to pick which prints he would like and finally decided on these 2.

He wanted me to make matching ones for his brother as well. I really struggled trying to take a photo of these altogether because the boys have grown so much.

Sewing Challenge 2020 – Week 16

This weeks challenge: ANZAC Week
Accepted/Rejected: Rejected

After making the bibs last week I had lots of this super soft double gauze left over and decided it would be perfect as Sprouts.

These are the Trees option with a small hack, to give them an elastic cuff at the bottom of the leg. I cut one of the Tree Cuffs, then cut it in half lengthwise to give a narrower cuff, I attached this as normal but left an opening to thread the elastic through.

I cut the elastic to the same length as the Bloomies Cuff for the size I was making and threaded through and then closed the gap.

These match perfectly with the bibs from last week to make a cute little outfit for my nephew.

Sewing Challenge 2020 – Week 15

This weeks challenge: Sew an Item for you Sewing Space
Accepted/Rejected: Rejected

A few weeks ago I got some amazing double gauze fabric that I have been wondering what to make with, its super soft and I love the earthy tone to the colours.

I haven’t sewn with double gauze before so decided to start with something small this week and made some Hybrid Bibs. These are great for catching drool and are adjustable from newborn to toddler size.

Itty Bitty with some added flair – Newborn Sewing Series

I started off this series sewing the Tidy Travel Tote. It has already been helpful for my toddler and us, seeing the entire South Africa went on a hand sanitizer craze and I luckily had some stored in mine!

The Itty Bitty comes in sizes from 24 weeks gestation to full term. Size dependant on fabric used and as we know each baby is different. I made my daughter size Small in the Knit option.

I prefer working with knit when it comes to little ones as the fit is very forgiving. Plus, my son was around 3.6kgs, so I am estimating her birth weight here.

My additions:

  • I tried my best to pattern match, specifically the stripes. I did this by cutting one side of the kimono then using said cut piece flipped over to match the stripes.
  • I used a lace trim around the cuffs and arm bands.
  • I didn’t use bias binding; I just added a band around the outer edge of the kimono at 1 inch in width
  • Also only used a tie inside and snaps on the opposite external side. Added some woven fabric behind the inner snap – alternatively you can use some interfacing.

I just love how this set turned out. It really shows me how small little ones are at birth. I am hoping to make another 2 sets. Perhaps one size up!
